At first blush it may look like a pregnant Cessna 150, but this light-sport aircraft (an advanced ultralight for us Canucks) is essentially a flying camper. AVWeb's Mary Grady caught up with ExplorerAero's president Bernard Laferriere at OshKosh '08 and got a first-hand tour of this crazy little thing. This little/big plane inspires only one thought: Sweet.
Although I may dream of much cooler and faster ways to blow large sums of money after I finally get my license, I must admit the first time I find myself with $100,000 (or $50,000 for the kit if I can coerce a farm dwelling relative to let me borrow their barn for a few months) to burn, this will probably be where it goes.
Part of the reason I decided to take up flying in the first place is we live in a very large country with a lot of beautiful country side. Most of the roads between the city I call home and most of this scenery are clogged with too many cars driven by too many people paying too little attention to what they're doing. With a cruise speed of 117 knots (~216km/h) and a quoted range of 510 nautical miles (~945km) at 6,000 feet, this chubby little fellow would not only see me far away from this foolishness, but with somewhere to eat and sleep whenever I decided to put down.
I can honestly say that my return to flying lessons now more than ever can't come soon enough.
